Sesto Fiorentino

Sesto Fiorentino is a town confining with Florence, which has its roots in an Etruscan settlement. The name 'Sesto' means in fact the sixth mile of the Etruscan Florentia setting on the ancient consular road to Pistoia.

The Montagnola Tomb and the Tomb of the Mula are evidences of this period and they can be visited by contacting the local Tourist Information Office.

The beautiful Villas named Gamba, Stanley, Solaria, Ginori e Guicciardini with their parks  are parts of the territory of the Municipality. The parish church of San Martino of the twelfth century has a Romanesque façade and a wooden crucifix by Agnoli Gaddi.

The Manifacture Doccia was founded by the Marquise Carlo Ginori in 1737 in the territory of Sesto Fiorentino and it was the first factory of porcelain in Europe. The first location of the factory houses now the Municipal Library, it was abandoned in the '50s to a more modern plant in the industrial area of Sesto Fiorentino

In the vicinity of the factory there is now the ‘Richard-Ginori Museum’, which organizes guided tours of the factory and educational activities for children and adults.

In the Municipality there is the seat of the Scientific Centre of the University of Florence. The Theatre of Limonaia is one of the landmarks of the city's cultural life in Villa Corsi Salviati as home to a rich theater season and the seat of the Intercity festival and school of theatre. There is also the Lab Nove Home, a new space care from theatrical school Laboratorio Nove.
