Campi Bisenzio is a small village in the plain of Florence, it developed as a farming village along the river Bisenzio with the cultivation of wheat, mulberry and linen. Thriving business in history were those related to straw and wool which have now given way to the leather productio and large engineering companies.
It is strongly linked to the river that runs through it, Campi Bisenzio was protected by the Strozzi fortress on the right bank, with a corner tower and walkways patrol. The most interesting modern project is the creation of the Urban Park of Villa Montalvo with 19 hectares of green spaces, a multipurpose space covered and the restoration of the Villa that houses the municipal library and a lot of cultural events.
The architectural jewel of the city is the Dante Theatre built in 1871 on the initiative of the ‘Academy of Perseveranti’ to become a reference point for opera in Italy. It was restored in 2000 and it houses now an interesting theatrical season under the direction of Alessandro Benvenuti, a famous Italian actor.
Specialties of Campi Bisenzio are “pecora alla campigiana”, pasta with sheep, the 'cielo stellato', a kind of fried with boiled ham and garlic, and in the villages surrounding fried frogs and duck's neck filling.
Choosing an hotel in Campi Bisenzio is ideal for those wishing to explore Florence and its surroundings away from the chaos of the city in a reality of the province.
